FAQ

How do I make an appointment?

There are three ways to make an appointment at the Writing Center:
1) Schedule a face to face appointment online
2) Call the Writing Center at 435-797-2712.
3) Visit the Writing Center, found in the basement of the Ray B. West building, room 104; the supervisor at the desk can assist you in making an appointment.

What will happen when I get there?

When you arrive at the Writing Center (RBW 104), tell the supervisor when your appointment time is. After checking in with the supervisor, take a seat in the reception area until the supervisor indicates that it is time for your appointment. You will be led to a tutoring room and assigned a tutor to work with. You and the tutor will have around 25 minutes to talk about your paper. At the end of the session, your tutor will send you and your teacher an email that includes the details of your appointment. If you need class credit for coming to the Writing Center, this official email will serve as proof of your visit. What should I bring and what kinds of questions should I ask in the session?

If you have a draft of your paper, we encourage you to bring it to your appointment. If you are unable to print out a hard copy of your paper, we do have computers in each tutor’s room to access digital copies (email, google drive, USB drives, etc.). During the appointment, we can address whatever concerns you have about your paper. It’s up to you what to discuss during the appointment—whether that’s just brainstorming, your thesis, paragraph transitions, or whatever else you may be concerned about. Keep in mind that we are not just here to edit your paper—we are here to help you become a better writer.

Who are the tutors?

Our tutors are USU students from majors all across campus. If you would like more information, you can look at our tutor directory

What is the goal of the Writing Center?

Our goal is to help students become independent writers for life. We strive to teach students to implement writing concepts discussed in class, cultivate the skills students need to create effective documents, and increase the confidence of student writers.

How will my teacher know I’ve been to the Writing Center?

At the end of each session, your tutor will send out an email form to both you and your teacher, detailing what you talked about during your session. When your teacher receives this email, he or she will know when you came into the Writing Center and what you talked about during your appointment.

What if none of the Writing Center’s hours are convenient for me?

We also have online tutoring. Because the tutors set their own online schedules, there are tutors available at all times of day. You can sign up for an online tutoring appointment. Keep in mind that for online appointments, you must submit your paper at least two days in advance. Check with your teacher to make sure that they will count online appointments for credit.

Who can visit the Writing Center?
